No Comedy Walk this month, Fashion Walk instead

Comedy Walk won't have a show on September 17th due to venue scheduling issues.

Each month our biggest challenge putting together Comedy Walk is getting the venues we need. Our venue sponsors let us into spaces that would otherwise be dark. Sometimes we get fantastic theaters such as the New LATC, the Palace, and the Los Angeles Theater.

Comedy Walk venues can change right up to the last minute. That can get pretty exciting for me as executive producer. It's quite an adrenaline rush to find yourself asking the question, where can I find a performance space for a show that needs to start in ten minutes?

Comedy Walk performers are the best. They've have been supportive and understanding, even when I've been forced to ask them to perform in spaces that are not worthy of their talents. Comedy Walk comedians have huge hearts. I appreciate their unflagging enthusiasm to make downtown Los Angeles the best location for comedy.

All our moving around and uncertainty makes it challenging to mount a consistently high quality show and to publicize it properly. The best solution may be a permanent theater. Last year we came close to that goal. When that fell through, I put the show on hiatus. We're still negotiating for spaces that can afford to host us.

The next Comedy Walk is scheduled for October 15th, to be held in conjunction with Los Angeles Fashion Week. I don't have an answer yet on Comedy Walk venues for October. Please stay tuned.

Looking for something fun to do downtown? Don't miss this month's Downtown Fashion Walk on September 17th:

No Comedy Walk for December

Hi. There's no Comedy Walk event for December.

We had a great Comedy for Peace event last month at the magnificent Los Angeles Theatre. Before our line-up of select comedians came on stage, we presented a screening of the Oscar-winning comedy musical WEST BANK STORY with audience Q&A with star Joey Nabor. Thank you to director Ari Sandal for lending me his 35mm print to show.

Also in November, the great folks at if.net flew in our online comedy contest winner Alec Sobel to perform in our show. Thank you Nicole Dunn for making that happen! Story here:

http://www.northjersey.com/entertainment/stage/Comic_makes_a_name_by_ruffling_feathers.html?c=y&page=1>http://www.northjersey.com/entertainment/stage/Comic_makes_a_name_by_ruffling_feathers.html?c=y&page=1

There are too many people to thank for making Comedy Walk happen. It was ambitious to present a monthly live comedy show on six simultaneous stages for free. We couldn't have done it without the help of dozens of volunteers. It wouldn't have been possible without downtown theaters generously providing space so we could put put on the show for free.

A year ago, downtown activist Brady Westwater came up with the idea of Comedy Walk and called me to produce it. It was always a Field of Dreams type of venture, build it and they will come. Casting director Gabrielle Pantera was fantastic at producing the talent part of the show.

Producing a large live monthly festival/show with no budget tested my mettle as a producer. Without Brady as location manager and Gabrielle to cast it, I couldn't have done it. Thank you Gabrielle and Brady!

Love you guys!

Robin

www.comedywalk.com/2008/09/

This month's featured performers include Jessica Glassberg, Johnny Dam and Keith Ashton. Jessica Glassberg is the head writer and a performer in the Jerry Lewis Telethon. Johnny Dam hosts the politically incorrect radio show DAMnation. Keith Ashton performs at The Improv.

A shout out to COMEDY WALK performer Jodi Miller for being featured on the front page of MySpace TV last week. Search on "Jodi Miller" at vids.myspace.com. See her live at COMEDY WALK this month.

This month's show is presented on six stages centered at the New Los Angeles Theatre Complex, 514 S. Spring St., Los Angeles, and surrounding venues, from 8:25pm to 10pm. There's plenty of parking in the neighborhood for about $5, but check you're not parking in one of the few lots that closes early. This month's COMEDY WALK is the third Thursday instead of our usual second Thursday of the month coinciding with Art Walk. Neighborhood galleries will be open on the 18th before COMEDY WALK for you to take in the art scene.

Coming up this fall at COMEDY WALK... Our October 16th show has a special theme of Mom Comedy and will be centered at the Tower Theatre. Our November 13th show, right after the presidential election, has a special theme of Comedy for Peace and will be centered at the Palace Theatre. November will feature Middle Eastern comedians.

Links and photos of the comedians...

We appreciate your help... It takes a cast and crew of fifty to run the show. It's only through the dedication of many volunteers that COMEDY WALK is possible as a free show. If you know someone who'd like to get involved and help COMEDY WALK, let me know. We need assistants and camera operators. Another way to help is as a sponsor. In-kind sponsors such as The Onion and Plays411 help provide publicity for the show. A significant sponsor is scriptcopier.com that provides all the show’s printing, including the great color posters. Paid sponsors such as Paramount Vantage help defray some of our expenses.

See you at the show?

Cheers,

Robin
